Triples 2011 - Viking Landing Participation Game - Using SAGA New Ruleset

Although we had a year to plan and execute as usual due to other priorities I left it quite late to get the required figures and longship completed.  All my figures were from Gripping Beast but the boat I decided to purchase a Revell Kit @ £15.  Back to the good old days of plastic kit making!
The board had taken a long time and massive credit goes out to the lads that put in a lot of weekend effort to complete the board.
The big day arrived - big kids and big excitement about the prospect of putting on this participation game.  Half an hour before the doors opened thought I better get to grips with the SAGA ruleset*.  I was on the twilight shift at the end of the day so plenty of time to "rehearse", but during the day spent quite a bit of time drifting back to our table. It was busy all of the time - people even booking a time slot to come and play or saying "Can I play on Sunday?"
The day went very well and my 2 til 5 shift whizzed by as I was enjoying the play just as much as the participants. Security came around to tell us to stop playing it was "home time!"
I did not go in on the Sunday but apparently the game was just as well attended and busy all day. 
So much so that we were voted the "Best Participation Triples Particiaption Game 2011"

How did we come to be playing SAGA?  We had decided on a Viking Skirmish game last year and were in the throws of creating or converting a ruleset to suit our purpose.  However at Vapnartak we say a demo of SAGA and asked if we could do a similar job at Triples.  The response was yes!

The rules allocate points for a small band eg 4 berserkers = 1 point, warlord = 1 point. Most games are upto 6 points. So the prospect of not having to paint many figures is quite appealing.

Now the "thrill" of the game is the shaking of the rune dice and using the outcomes on a "Ouija" board of skills and options.  Know the board and you have the power. Then combat is a simple dice off situation.  I may be too simplistic in my description but it is an enjoyable fast paced game.

So we eagerly await the general launch of this ruleset and associated rune dice and playing boards.

There are various play boards to suit the factions: viking, anglo-danish, saxon etc
